Interactive Brokers Review 2026: Maximum Power, Zero Hand-Holding

Interactive Brokers gives Canadians rock-bottom commissions and access to 150+ global exchanges — but no halal portfolio, no hand-holding, and no commission-free tier. We reviewed IBKR Pro as a DIY rail for Shariah-screened stocks and ETFs, paired with Zoya for the screening work.

The halal check: what we screened

Shariah screen result: PASS with conditions. IBKR's self-directed stock and ETF accounts are a neutral rail — halal or haram depends entirely on what you buy. Conditions: avoid the margin account (interest-bearing leverage), never use the platform for FX or CFD speculation — currency conversion is for buying USD-listed halal ETFs only — ignore interest-on-cash features, and screen every single holding with a Shariah screener before buying.

Here's the honest framing: Interactive Brokers offers nothing halal out of the box. There is no halal portfolio, no Shariah filter in the screener, no compliant watchlist. What it offers instead is the cheapest credible pipe in Canada for a DIY investor who already knows what they want to buy — which is exactly why it belongs on this site, paired with a screener.

The workflow for a halal investor here: screen candidates in Zoya → convert CAD to USD at near-spot rates when the target ETF is US-listed → buy the screened ETF in a TFSA → purify dividends annually. The currency conversion deserves emphasis because it's IBKR's single biggest halal-relevant advantage: converting Canadian dollars to US dollars costs about 0.002% with a ~US$2.00 minimum, versus ~1.5% at Wealthsimple Trade and ~1.5% at Questrade. On a $10,000 purchase of a US-listed halal ETF like SPUS or HLAL, that difference is roughly $150 saved — real money that compounds. We treat conversion strictly as a means to buy ETFs, never as currency trading.

What we deliberately did not test or use: margin accounts, securities lending income programs, options strategies, futures, CFDs, and interest-on-cash features. All sit outside our Shariah screen. IBKR's marketing will push several of these at you inside the platform — we treat them as not covered, full stop. Background on building a compliant portfolio this way is in our halal investing in Canada guide.

Fees that matter for halal investors

Watch out: IBKR's platform surfaces margin trading, options, futures and CFDs prominently, and its cash accounts can pay interest. We don't review or recommend any of these — interest-bearing leverage and speculative derivatives are outside our Shariah screen. Stick to the cash account, screened stocks/ETFs, and currency conversion for purchases only.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Cheapest commissions in Canada for active or larger DIY investors
  • Near-spot currency conversion — huge for US-listed halal ETFs like SPUS/HLAL
  • 150+ exchanges in 33 countries — unmatched global access for screened stocks
  • Fractional shares available
  • No minimum deposit, no inactivity fees
  • TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RRIF support
  • Pairs cleanly with Zoya for the screening workflow

Cons

  • No native halal portfolio — screening is entirely on you
  • IBKR Lite (commission-free) not available to Canadians
  • Steep learning curve — the platform overwhelms beginners
  • Commissions on both buys and sells (not $0 like Questrade/Wealthsimple)
  • RESP and LIRA reportedly not supported
  • Platform aggressively surfaces margin, options and futures — all outside our screen

FAQ

Is Interactive Brokers halal?

IBKR is a neutral brokerage rail — it sells no halal account or portfolio. A self-directed stock/ETF account can be used in a Shariah-compliant way if you screen every holding, avoid the margin account (interest-bearing leverage), avoid FX/CFD and derivatives speculation, and use currency conversion only to buy USD-listed halal ETFs. We are not scholars; this is factual product information, not a fatwa.

Is IBKR Lite available in Canada?

No. IBKR Lite — the commission-free tier — is available to US residents only. Canadians get IBKR Pro, with tiered pricing from $0.0035/share (min $0.35) or fixed pricing at $0.005/share (min $1.00), and a C$1.00 minimum commission on stocks and ETFs.

What commissions do Canadians actually pay at IBKR?

On IBKR Pro fixed pricing, a typical small stock/ETF order costs $1.00. On tiered pricing, small orders can cost less than $1.00 before exchange pass-throughs. Commissions apply on both buys and sells — unlike Questrade and Wealthsimple Trade, where stock/ETF trades are $0.

Can I buy halal ETFs like WSHR, SPUS or HLAL with IBKR?

Yes. Canadian-listed WSHR and US-listed SPUS/HLAL can all be bought in an IBKR self-directed account, including inside a TFSA or RRSP. IBKR's near-spot currency conversion (~0.002%, min ~US$2.00) makes the US-listed options far cheaper to buy here than at Canadian brokerages charging ~1.5% FX fees. Screen every holding with Zoya before buying.

Does Interactive Brokers have an affiliate program I can use?

IBKR runs a refer-a-friend program (with a US$10,000 funding threshold for the referral perk), which is a client referral perk — not a publisher affiliate channel. IBKR's publisher affiliate terms must be verified directly before any promotion, which is why this review carries no affiliate links.

What registered accounts does IBKR support in Canada?

TFSA, RRSP, FHSA and RRIF accounts are supported. RESP and LIRA accounts are reportedly not supported by IB Canada — if you need an RESP, you'll need a second brokerage. We recommend confirming current account support on IBKR's site before opening.
