Stock screener · Screened October 2026

Is AMD Stock Halal?

Screener: Provisional pass — AMD passes Shariah screening as of October 2026, with one asterisk. Its business (semiconductors) is halal, its debt is 0.32% of market cap, and its cash is 1.31% of market cap. But AMD does not separately disclose interest income, so the 5% income screen cannot be fully verified — hence the provisional result, not an estimate.

PASS*
Provisionally Shariah-compliant (October 2026). Passes the business-activity screen and the debt and cash screens. Interest income is not separately disclosed in AMD's filings, so the 5% income screen cannot be verified — we mark this a provisional pass rather than estimating a number. This is a screening result, not a fatwa — methodologies differ and company financials change every quarter.

Gate one: Business activity

AMD is a semiconductor company. Its Q2 2026 revenue ($11.536 billion) came from three segments: Data Center ($6.718B — AI accelerators, server CPUs and GPUs, DPUs, FPGAs), Client and Gaming ($3.841B — Client $3.062B in desktop/notebook CPUs, APUs and chipsets; Gaming $779M in discrete GPUs and semi-custom chips for game consoles), and Embedded ($977M — embedded CPUs, APUs, FPGAs and adaptive SoCs).

The “Gaming” segment is consumer graphics hardware, not gambling — no gambling, conventional-finance, alcohol, or weapons revenue appears anywhere in the filing. (The filing mentions U.S. export controls on AMD's Instinct MI308 data-center GPUs; that is trade regulation, not a prohibited business line.)

Gate two: Financial ratios

AAOIFI-style screening applies three ratio tests (thresholds shown; Dow Jones Islamic Market methodology uses 33% where AAOIFI uses 30% — the ceilings below use the stricter 30%):

RatioAMD (Oct 2026)CeilingResult
Total debt ÷ market cap0.32% ($3.226B debt on ~$998.7B market cap)< 30%PASS
Cash + short-term investments ÷ market cap1.31% ($13.111B cash + investments on ~$998.7B market cap)< 30%PASS
Interest income ÷ total revenueNot separately disclosed (bundled in “Other income, net”)< 5%NOT VERIFIED

Figures: 10-Q for the quarter ended June 27, 2026 (filed August 5, 2026). AMD reports only “Other income (expense), net” of $598M for the quarter, which bundles interest income with investment gains/losses and currency effects — the filing says the quarter's jump was driven mainly by unrealized gains from a public listing of non-marketable equity securities. Interest income alone is not disclosed, so we do not estimate it. Market cap from the September 30, 2026 close of $611.76 × 1,632,475,042 shares outstanding.

Screen 3: Purification

Because interest income is not separately disclosed, a strict purification figure cannot be computed from the filing. If you hold AMD, a conservative approach is to treat a small share of any distributions as non-compliant and run them through our purification calculator — or ask a qualified scholar how to handle undisclosed interest income.

Why screeners can disagree. The asterisk is ours, not a disagreement: at 0.32% debt and 1.31% cash, AMD clears every variant of the balance-sheet screens. The only open item is the income screen, where some data vendors publish their own estimates of AMD's interest income — we prefer the provisional label over adopting someone else's estimate. When AMD discloses the figure, this page gets a full pass or fail on the income screen.

What could change the screener

We re-screen on a quarterly cadence — the screener above reflects the latest quarterly report and September 2026 market data.

How Canadians buy it

AMD trades only on the NASDAQ as AMD — there is no TSX listing, so you buy in USD. To convert cheaply, use Norbert's gambit on Questrade rather than paying a broker's conversion spread. AMD is available through Questrade and Wealthsimple's self-directed accounts, and it can be held in a TFSA, RRSP, or FHSA — all wrappers are neutral to Shariah compliance. See our Questrade vs Wealthsimple comparison for the practical differences.

FAQ

Is AMD halal to invest in?

As of October 2026: provisionally yes — halal semiconductor business, 0.32% debt ratio, 1.31% cash ratio. The asterisk: AMD doesn’t separately disclose interest income, so the 5% income screen can’t be verified from the filing. This is a screening result, not a religious ruling.

Doesn’t AMD have a Gaming segment — is that gambling?

No. AMD’s Gaming revenue ($779M in Q2 2026) is discrete graphics cards and semi-custom chips for game consoles — hardware, not gambling. No gambling revenue appears anywhere in the filing.

Why is this a provisional pass instead of a full pass?

The income screen needs interest income divided by revenue. AMD bundles interest income inside “Other income (expense), net” ($598M last quarter, mostly one-off investment gains), so the exact figure isn’t public. We mark the page provisional rather than inventing a number.

Could “Other income, net” hide a lot of interest income?

The filing says it is mainly interest income, investment gains/losses, and currency effects — and that the Q2 jump was driven by unrealized gains on equity securities, not interest. Interest expense was only $37M on $11.536B of revenue, so interest income is unlikely to be material — but “unlikely” isn’t a figure, so the pass stays provisional.

What if AMD becomes non-compliant after I buy?

The common guidance: sell the holding (scholars differ on timing when it’s at a loss — ask a qualified scholar), purify the non-compliant share of any income received, and don’t offset other gains against it. Re-screen quarterly; we’ll update this page when the numbers move.
