Purification Calculator

Even Shariah-compliant funds can earn a small share of income from non-permissible sources (under the 5% screening ceiling). Purification means donating that share of your dividends to charity. Pick your fund below — we pull its latest published purification factor automatically. Then enter your dividends and the calculator does the rest.

How it works

One line of arithmetic per holding: dividends received × purification factor = amount to donate. Funds that publish purification data (like SP Funds) release a new factor each quarter; we track the latest one so you don't have to hunt it down. Add up every holding and you have your annual purification amount.

Where the factors come from

Two things to know. First, purification traditionally applies to dividends; methodologies differ on whether it also applies to capital gains on sale — the common retail practice covers dividends, and scholars differ beyond that. Second, donate to a registered charity and keep the receipt: in Canada, charitable donations to registered charities are eligible for the charitable donation tax credit. This is general information, not a ruling — when in doubt, ask a qualified scholar.

When to do this

Once a year, after the calendar year ends and your dividend totals are final — many investors do it alongside their zakat calculation. Our zakat calculator for Canadian investors handles TFSA, RRSP, and FHSA on that side of the annual cleanup (we also compared five third-party zakat calculators).

FAQ

What exactly is purification?

Purification is the practice of donating the non-permissible share of your investment income to charity. Shariah-compliant companies may still earn small amounts of interest income (under the 5% screening threshold), so screening methodologies pair compliance with purification to keep the portfolio clean.

How current are the auto-filled factors?

They're the latest quarter published by the fund — currently Q2 2026, published by SP Funds in September 2026. Funds typically publish new factors about 2.5 months after quarter-end. We update this page as new quarters are released.

Do I purify capital gains too?

Published methodologies differ. The widely practiced retail approach purifies dividends; some scholars extend purification to capital gains realized on sale. This calculator covers the dividend case — for gains, ask a qualified scholar which methodology to follow.

Where should the money go?

To charity — any charitable cause, given without expectation of return. If you want the Canadian charitable donation tax credit, the recipient must be a registered charity and you need the official receipt.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted, stored, or tracked by this site.
