Stock screener · Screened October 2026

Is Meta (META) Halal?

Screener: Yes — Meta passes Shariah screening as of October 2026. Its business (advertising-led social platforms plus AR/VR hardware) is halal, its debt is 4.53% of market cap, and its interest income is 1.41% of revenue. Below: the full screening math, the caveats on ad revenue, and what could change the answer.

PASS
Shariah-compliant (October 2026). Passes the business-activity screen and all three AAOIFI-style financial screens. This is a screening result, not a fatwa — methodologies differ and company financials change every quarter.

Gate one: Business activity

Meta is a technology company with two reportable segments: Family of Apps (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp) and Reality Labs (virtual and augmented reality consumer hardware, software, and content). In Q2 2026, Family of Apps generated $60.370 billion of the $60.801 billion total revenue (Reality Labs: $431 million), and the filing states that substantially all revenue currently comes from advertising on Facebook and Instagram.

None of Meta's reported revenue comes from prohibited industries (conventional finance/lending, gambling, alcohol, weapons, adult entertainment). Two caveats: the filing does not break advertising revenue down by advertiser industry, so exposure to ads from prohibited industries cannot be quantified from primary sources; and the 10-Q's only gambling/banking/lending mention is a risk-factor disclosure that its payments products may become subject to such laws — a regulatory warning, not a revenue line.

Gate two: Financial ratios

AAOIFI-style screening applies three ratio tests (thresholds shown; Dow Jones Islamic Market methodology uses 33% where AAOIFI uses 30% — the ceilings below use the stricter 30%):

RatioMeta (Oct 2026)CeilingResult
Total debt ÷ market cap4.53% ($83.664B long-term debt on ~$1.847T market cap)< 30%PASS
Cash + marketable securities ÷ market cap4.89% ($90.260B cash + securities on ~$1.847T market cap)< 30%PASS
Interest income ÷ total revenue1.41% ($859M on $60.801B, Q2 2026)< 5%PASS

Figures: 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (filed July 30, 2026) for revenue, debt, cash, and interest income; market cap from the September 30, 2026 close of $725.18 × 2,547,506,225 shares outstanding. The income-statement line is “Interest and other income (expense), net” (-$19M); the $859M interest income comes from the MD&A breakout table in the same filing.

Screen 3: Purification

With interest income at 1.41% of revenue, the purification share of any income you receive from META is small but nonzero. If you hold the stock and receive distributions, run them through our purification calculator.

Why screeners can disagree. Meta clears both the 30% and 33% variants of the debt and cash screens, and the 5% income screen, so no input difference we know of flips the result. The judgment area is advertising: screeners classify platform advertising itself as halal, but individual scholars may assess specific ad categories (e.g. ads for alcohol or gambling) differently — when in doubt, ask a qualified scholar.

What could change the screener

We re-screen on a quarterly cadence — the screener above reflects the latest quarterly report and September 2026 market data.

How Canadians buy it

Meta trades only on the NASDAQ as META — there is no TSX listing, so you buy in USD. To convert cheaply, use Norbert's gambit on Questrade rather than paying a broker's conversion spread. META is available through Questrade and Wealthsimple's self-directed accounts, and it can be held in a TFSA, RRSP, or FHSA — all wrappers are neutral to Shariah compliance. See our Questrade vs Wealthsimple comparison for the practical differences.

FAQ

Is Meta halal to invest in?

As of October 2026: yes, it passes Shariah screening — advertising-led business, 4.53% debt ratio, 1.41% interest income. This is a screening result, not a religious ruling.

Does Meta make money from gambling or lending?

Not as reported revenue. The 10-Q’s only gambling/banking/lending mention is a risk-factor disclosure that payments products may become subject to such laws — not a revenue line. Meta’s reported revenue is advertising plus AR/VR hardware and software.

What about ads for haram products on Facebook and Instagram?

The filing does not break advertising revenue down by advertiser industry, so this exposure cannot be quantified from primary sources. Screeners classify platform advertising itself as halal; individual scholars may assess specific ad categories differently — ask a qualified scholar.

Meta has $83.7 billion in debt — how does it pass?

The screen compares debt to market value, not to zero. Meta’s $83.664B of long-term debt is about 4.53% of its roughly $1.847 trillion market cap — far under the 30% ceiling. The absolute number sounds large; the ratio is what the methodology measures.

What if Meta becomes non-compliant after I buy?

The common guidance: sell the holding (scholars differ on timing when it’s at a loss — ask a qualified scholar), purify the non-compliant share of any income received, and don’t offset other gains against it. Re-screen quarterly; we’ll update this page when the numbers move.
